girls trip 10/12-10/17

Hi, I will be arriving with a couple of girlfriends to celebrate a 40th birthday, we are staying at Marriot Beach Place, wondering what is recommended to do? We plan on beach and pool, hope to find a nearby grocery store/liquor store, since we will have a full kitchen. Hoping to get out and about, but not spend too much money having fun....good, but inexpensive restaurants; fun bars, that aren%26#39;t too techno, etc. I%26#39;d love any advice people here can provide! thanks in advance!

Also, what is dress like during day and evenings out?

How are you getting to Beach Place ( rental car/taxi etc?) I ask because there is no grocery/liquor store anywhere in that area , except a few really overpriced Mom and Pop ';marts'; with incredibly marked up prices.- and I don%26#39;t even know how much liquor they have besides beer and wine. If you%26#39;re driving, you might want to go across 17th St. Causeway and stop at the Harbor shops where there is a Publix Supermarket and a Total Wine ( also good selection of beer/spirits) right next to each other. If you are taxiing ,it might very well be worth your while to hva the taxi stop withg meter running and split up to purchase what you need as fast as you can- both for selection and cost. Or, hop on a Sun Trolley after you arrive and go back down to 17th St- just make sure you get the correct one- as there is also no grocery shopping on Las Olas Blvd- where the other Sun Taxi line goes. There are some fun '; locals'; joints just off 17thSt ( north at the traffic light by Harbor Shops, Embassy Suites) like Southport Raw Bar and Quarterdeck and a new place RJ Gators in Harbor Shops with an all day Happy Hour- so maybe you can combine groceries with fun. I just saw an addfor another place called ShipWrecked ( or something similar ) down there advertising $1 drafts- but I haven%26#39;t figured out excatly where it is yet- may check it out later this week and repost.

I think some of us locals should lobby Publix to open a real grocery closer to the beach ( and while we%26#39;re at it we need to convince IHOP or Denny%26#39;s to open upa breakfast spot ).

Enjoy Beach Place- if you are driving I would just caution that their parking garage is about the most poorly designed aggravating one I%26#39;ve ever used, so prepare for quite a hike- apparently there is a pecking order for parking and whatever it is I didn%26#39;t qualify- very narrow area too- I was really afraid my car would get smacked- let us know how you make out!

My sister %26amp; I are staying at Marriott Beach Place Nov 1-4th girls getaway. How was your stay? Any advise on restaurants/nightlife? We%26#39;re not techno as well.....42 yrs. old. Sounds like we%26#39;re looking for what you %26amp; your friends were looking for. We%26#39;re not renting a car so we%26#39;ll be hoofing it. Did you happen to take the water taxi anywhere? I noticed it goes to Las Olas Blvd. which i hear is a great people watching place %26amp; has good restaurants. Your help would be most appreciated. thanks

Here is a link to the Sun Trolley web site.

Water Taxi should be a great and fun option for you- but it is$11 pp fore an all day pass (no other ticket options) - so try to plan for a day when you have time to get out in the daytime and do the North- South leg , up and down the Intracoastal , looking at the mega mansions and mega yachts and then later in the afternoon , take it again south with a transfer to the east - west leg that runs across Las Olas for sidewalk cafes and people watching etc. That way you%26#39;ll get the most use for your money. Be sure to double check the schedules though and give yourself plenty of time for the return, as it is a slow paced ride and doesn%26#39;t run that often- and don%26#39;t forget to hit two of my favorite spots on Las Olas- Seldom Seen- the best offbeat gift shop in the world, and Kilwins for great ice craem or a slab of fabulous fudge for late night snacking- both near one another on the north side of Las Olas.

The Marriott Beach Place has a ton of restaurants/bars located on the property if I%26#39;m not mistaken. Hooters, Fat Tuesdays, etc. etc. There%26#39;s about six or seven restaurants/bars overlooking the beach and the main drag. They are not inexpensive, but I don%26#39;t remember them really gouging you for food or drink.

Normal Cougar-wear is acceptable anywhere in Fort Lauderdale.... just kidding. There%26#39;s not too many places between beach and Las Olas where you really need to dress-up and those spots are pretty obvious. Jeans, skirts, or shorts with your %26#39;dress%26#39; flip-flops and your nicest t-shirt will work 90% of the time.
