Driving from Sanford airp. in the dark to International dr.

Ok some are saying it is a breeze but something is holding me back......

pls. encourage me as it is much more convenient to get the rental car at the airport ;)

i LOVE driving in america!! roads are wide cars drive themselves, it%26#39;s great. picking my car up is one of my highlights. the signposts are sooooooo easy to read. go for ie it%26#39;s great

by the way when i first drove there 2 years ago i had only had my license 10 mths or so and it was easier than over here :)

dont worry! we went in feb and couldnt believe how easy it was to pick up the car and get onto the road! we arrived in the evening and had to travel in the dark. we were really worried before we went and thought about going on the toll roads, but decicded to take the bull by the horns and went straight onto the i 4. we were travelling all the way down to davenport and soon got used to the roads which are very wide. just take your time watch the road signs and am sure you will be ok in fact we used the i 4 to get to everywhere it is very convenient, just like our motorways but lots bigger! jan

In case you have second thoughts about driving after a long flight...

We have arranged to pick up our car the day after arriving, from international drive. We don%26#39;t mind driving in the USA, but we do not want to stand in line for an hour to collect our car after a 9-10 hour flight with 3 kids under 7! We have splashed out on a limo to our hotel and will collect our car the next morning, hopefully with more civilized heads on!!! The cost of the limo is $150 which i feel is money well spent for a more enjoyable start to the holiday! I%26#39;m sure a taxi would be a lot less and it is worth the money if it eases anxiety over driving when you get there!!

Hi..

we agree, everything can look so different in the dark..also we agree with others before and don%26#39;t worry, remember everyone else will be leaving the airport about the same time, just take time and ask advice from the rental firm..we found them very understanding the first time we arrived at Sanford..

One tip though, make sure you know how to work the car lights and wipers etc...sounds stupid but you really don%26#39;t want to be fiddling with the controls as you are driving along..

We always come down the Greenaway ( signposted 417...) it%26#39;s a quieter road than the I4, but it depends where you are headed...every exit is clearly marked, ask at the rental which number exit you need...

A couple of days and you%26#39;ll be driving like you%26#39;ve always been there...

I have to disagree with the last post, $150 is just a waste of money to me that%26#39;s a days spending money but maybe moneys no object.

I do not consider it good advise to pick up the car next day and have to learn to drive it on I Drive which is choked with traffic.

Far better ti pick up a Sanford you have 3 miles of empty road before you get to the Greenway 417. And its more cost efictive and you will have a car to ghet back to the airport

A t the traffic lights before the bridge which carries this highway get into the far left hand lane. Follow signs Tampa Disney parks 417 Greenway south.

Stay on it till you come to international airport turn off Beaches Eexpressway 528 . go past the airport and the end of the runway to exit 6. Exit on 6 onto Mc Coy road, keep stright on and this changes to Sand lake road , Keep straight on about 12 miles from airport this will hit I Drive.

you will have to find out if you hotel is north or south of Sand Lake road and make the appropriate turning.

We%26#39;ve been lucky enough to fly to/from Orlando Int airport but dont think twice about the drive. We done it rain/sun/wind/dark/dawn etc and the onyl time we hated was rush-hour. Mccoy/Sandlake as above is our preferred route as well but if you staying South I Drive you can stay on expressway until to actual come to I Drive itself and basically turn right.

You know I think I%26#39;ll open up a business at the major British airports where travellers can practice driving a US type car on the ';wrong'; side of the road while they wait for their flights. What do you think - 15 to 20 minutes of driving should be all that%26#39;s needed.

Seriously the signs are well lit and can be seen from the distance in enough time for you to get in the correct lane. If you%26#39;re unsure, simply pull aside on the shoulder of the road and collect your thoughts.

As someone said, for night driving be sure you know how to turn on the lights before you leave and if it looks like it is going to rain, check where the wiper switch is too.

thanks for all your posts.

I have planned to go straight onto I-4 is that ';taking the bulls by the horns'; and why ?

Have used the I-4 before and find it extremely convenient, but during the daytime only ;)

Had not considered the weather :/ pouring rain etc.

Do I have to worry about crimes on the I-4 ?

I-4 is just as easy especially as it will be after rush hour. Here again, all the signs are illuminated and easily visible from a distance. Exit information is given well before you get to the exits. No, you don%26#39;t have to worry about crime along I-4. There will still be many cars on it - you will not be alone.

Hi all again :)

have been looking at mapquest.com and it looks quite a straight drive.

Think I will pick up the car at the airport, saves a lot of money.

Will be using Thrifty (it is quite cheap, a lot cheaper than Hertz which I usually use )

Love
