Anyone had a Visa but still refused entry?

We have just come back after our first trip and after hearing all about it my brother and his wife would like to come with us when we go back.

Problem!! When he was 19 (10 years ago) he was charged and convicted of robbery and served 2 years in jail. He has not put a foot wrong since. What do you all think of his chances of getting a visa and if he got one would they refuse him in at the airport.

Has this happened to anyone else and what did you and everyone else in your group/family do??

Lilly Allen the singer last month. She had a works visa but got kicked out at LA because of her bad UK press.

Robbery in Scotland is a common law indictable offence which can only be dealt with at the higher courts so it puts it into the %26#39;very serious%26#39; category. The rehabilitation of Offenders Act does not cover this offence for disclosure purposes, so he has to admit to it.

The US Embassy will therefore treat this with greatear scrutiny than a drink driving or assault.

A visa does not guarentee the right of entry, technically, he could be questioned by Immigration on entry and if he failed the personality test (as simple as that), entry refused no reason given with his passport endorsed.

Lots of convicted people get in and out of the US every year with an appropriate visa without issue.

Lots of people do not admit to anything and try to blag their way in, but, if you googled your brothers name - would you find him in a newspaper report for his crime? It is that simple for Immigration.

No one hear can answer your question, other than provide anectdotal information. For your peace of mind, he will have to apply to the US embassy and make an appointment well before you book. IOnce he gets his visa, if stopped, be polite admit what is on the visa and be remorseful.

I would also check with insurers especially if you choose not to get one if they will pay out.

As a matter of interest.

Someone can have a visa issued at the British embassy to visit the UK.

At the airport in the UK, he can still be refused entry if the immigration officer is not satisfied that he will adhere to the terms of the visa.
